German Patent Attorney, European Trademark and Design Attorney; represents clients in the field of intellectual property law before the German Patent and Trademark Office, the German Federal Patent Court, the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trademarks and Designs) as well as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Technical background: Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at the RWTH Aachen University
1993: Entry into the field of intellectual property law as a trainee patent attorney in the Patent and Trademark Office SCHMETZ of his father Bruno Schmetz
1997: Accredited as German Patent Attorney and European Trademark and Design Attorney


His work on intellectual property rights focuses particularly on inventions concerning mechanical engineering. Walter Schmetz is also involved in issues of trademarks, designs, licenses and employed inventors’ law.

Member of the Chamber of German Patent Attorneys and further professional organizations, in particular the Bundesverband Deutscher Patentanwälte e.V. (Federal Association of German Patent Attorneys), Vereinigung der Nordrhein-Westfälischen Patentanwälte e.V. (Association of the Patent Attorneys of North Rhine-Westphalia), Deutsche Vereinigung für gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht e.V. (German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property) and Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (Association of German Engineers)
